The trial edition of the Portfolio Monitor consists two spread sheet pages accessed from tabs at the bottom of the screen.
Merv's Trades is where you enter and watch Merv's trades from the Tutorials, Trade Letters, or Newsletters.
Help is where you will find information for using the program.
The full edition of the Portfolio Monitor consists of the Merv's Trades page and the Help spread sheet plus four additional sheets holding the current, closed and archived trades:
Current Positions includes the open positions you have entered.
Closed This Year includes positions closed this year. When you close a position in the Current Positions screen, it automatically is transferred to this page. Typically these are positions that you have closed during the current tax year. By checking the total profit or loss to date in the upper right side of the screen, you can estimate your taxable gain for the year to date. Remember that some of the gains might be long term, others short term; you can tell by looking the Days Held column.
Closed Last Year are the positions closed during the previous tax year. By checking the total profit or loss in the upper right side of the screen, you can estimate your taxable gain for that year. Remember that some of the gains might be long term, others short term; you can tell by looking the Days Held column. Use the Advance Year button from the Control Panel to move positions closed this year into this sheet. Typically, this is done at the beginning of the tax year. Remember, however, to wait until all of your December trade confirmations are entered before starting the new year.
Archived Positions is intended for closed positions from earlier tax periods. When no longer relevant, you may wish to begin deleting some of these positions. You must manually select the Advance Year button from the control panel to move a position from the Closed Last Year screen to the Archived Positions screen.
