While the battered Nasdaq and Russell 2000 ended marginally in positive territory, the broad market and blue-chip Dow still shed over 1% as traders locked in profits from the previous week's rally. Bond prices also fell, pushing Treasury yields higher, while the dollar went back on the retreat, magnifying the performance of foreign shares for U.S.-based investors. Furthermore, consumers now expect inflation to jump. Meanwhile, retail spending ground nearly to a halt, edging up just 0.1% in February.
